SITUATION
A researcher working in a large corporate company in the EU, with Assistant Professor-level experience, led a research group focusing on AI and biology. However, she became increasingly frustrated by the growing level of control and micromanagement in her role. Wanting greater academic freedom, she decided to explore professor positions in academia, primarily in the EU but remaining open to opportunities in the U.S.
To successfully transition, she recognized the need to improve her communication and networking strategies, particularly in approaching professors and university directors to establish potential collaborations. She sought guidance on how to initiate conversations, develop relationships, and identify common research projects as a foundation for future academic partnerships.
STRATEGY + RESULTS
The first step was to transform her industry-focused application materials into a standout academic portfolio. Her CV and motivation letter needed restructuring to emphasize academic merits, including publications, conference contributions, academic administration experience, and a well-crafted scientific research statement.
Beyond application materials, we focused on networking strategies suited to her introverted nature. She learned that effective networking doesn’t require being naturally extroverted—instead, she developed a structured approach that allowed her to engage in meaningful discussions with university professionals, present her research projects, and explore funding opportunities in a way that felt authentic to her.
With increased confidence, she began contacting universities, initiating discussions, and applying for open positions. Through consistent outreach and strategic applications, she secured a professor position at a top-ranked university in the U.S. after two years, while maintaining strong collaborations in the EU.
